HUMMER’s first production E85 will be H2 and H2 SUT

Trying to portray a ‘built to do a job’ truck to an environmentally big truck, HUMMER is doing everything it can to get rid of its gas-guzzling image. According to a HUMMER spokesman, HUMMER’s first production E85 models will be the 2009 H2 pickup and H2 SUT. The announcement was made during the opening of the Dallas area dealership’s E85 station. HUMMER said that it is committed to offering biofuel capability on all its vehicles by 2010.

Spending more than $500,000, Classic Chevrolet-HUMMER dealership in Grapevine, Texas, installed nine pumps dedicated to E85, E10 and biodiesel.

“There’s no telling where this might lead,” said Larry Burns, GM vice president of R&D and strategic planning. “Down the road we may even want to consider hydrogen dispensers at dealerships.”

GM plans to offer more than 15 FlexFuel models for the 2009 model year.

The new Hummer H3T

The new Hummer H3T will boast a five foot long flatbed rear. Shown at the recent Chicago Auto Show, this revised version is heavily based on the existing H3 and will be sold in North America, Europe and the Middle East.

Unmistakably Hummer, the flagship H3T Alpha is powered by the same GM-sourced 300bhp 5.3-litre V8 that has proved so popular, albeit with an aluminum block to improve weight distribution. Entry level cars get a 3.7-litre inline five cylinder motor, producing 242bhp and 242lb ft, that will prove slightly friendlier at the pumps. With several trim options and either auto or manual transmissions available the new model aims to satisfy every lifestyle interest.

There will be a choice of suspension packages to choose from, too. The standard heavy-duty handling set up is geared up for road use and light off-road capability whilst specifying the Off-Road Adventure option fits tuned shocks, along with locking differentials and massive 33-inch tires.

HUMMER HX Concept

With its unmistakable HUMMER design and a compact, go-anywhere driving ethic, the HUMMER HX concept challenges the hierarchy of the trail. HUMMER displayed the nimble, reconfigurable off-roader at the 2008 North American International Auto Show.

More compact than a HUMMER H3 – 81 inches (2,057 mm) wide, with a 103-inch wheelbase (2,616-mm) – the HX concept is an open-air, two-door off-road vehicle that packs the off-road acumen for which HUMMER has become legendary, along with an easily convertible body that acclimates to varied trail conditions, cargo needs or passenger whims. Its design is based on the ideas developed by a trio of young designers who are new to the HUMMER studio.

The HX is HUMMER’s vision an agile, trail-ready, open-air vehicle that fits the lifestyles of everyone who needs or wants to drive off road,” said Martin Walsh, HUMMER general manager. “Of course, it carries exceptional off-road capability and the distinctive styling for which all HUMMERs are known.
The HX offers an open-air driving experience via a pair of removable roof panels above the driver and front passenger, and a modular, removable rear roof assembly. With the roof panels and roof assembly removed, the HX is transformed into a true convertible.

Easy removal of the roof panels and rear-roof assembly enables quick conversion from a closed vehicle to an open one. The HX also was designed with several roof assemblies, allowing this versatile vehicle to be configured as an SUT (with the roof assembly removed), a stylish slant-back or a traditional, wagon-like design that offers a bit more cargo space.
The HX was shown with a slant-back configuration, wearing a desert-inspired matte olive paint scheme, at the North American International Auto Show. Additional convertible features include:
  • Removable doors – easily removable pins in the exposed hinges allow the doors to be removed quickly – an appreciated feature of many serious off-roaders
  • Removable fender flares – attached with quarter-turn quick-release fasteners, the composite fender flares can be quickly removed for additional trail/rock clearance, or if the flare is damaged during off-road driving
The modular design of the roof and removable body panels mark an evolution of HUMMER’s design aesthetic,” said Carl Zipfel, director of design. “These features demonstrate a deeper understanding of enthusiast desires when it comes to off-road driving – and the slant-back design gives the HX a look all its own.

Hummer HX Concept

E-85 FlexFuel capable HUMMER HX embodies the off road spirit of HUMMER in a fully customizable package. The HX offers an open-air driving experience via a pair of removable roof panels above the driver and front passenger and a modular, removable rear roof assembly enabling a quick conversion from closed vehicle to open vehicle SUT. It also features a slant back assembly and removable doors and fender flairs.

One of the designers, David Rojas, said:

While he gave us creative liberty and challenged us to develop innovative ideas, he also defined three HUMMER proportions – wheelbase, approach and departure angles, and stance – and assigned one to each of us. It gave us a chance to collaborate, but also take our own direction.
Hummer HX Concept, designed by three new GM designers, David Rojas, Min Young Kang and Robert Jablonski, under Carl Zipfel’s supervision, the director of the Hummer design studio.

Hummer H3T

The Hummer H3T from 2003 is obviously of Humvee pedigree, with its oversize toy-like appearance and exaggerated 'bolt-on' extras. He has a space vehicle look, build for planet Mars.

Interestingly Hummer and Nike joined forces during the design of the H3T and as a result the tires are suitable for many different environments and traction conditions. Nike also influenced the interior of the H3T with use of a lightweight material currently used in its climate control performance sports wear. The seats also feature backpacks built into the seat backs.
The H3T is powered along by a 3.5 litre in line 5 cylinder producing 350 hp driving the wheels via a 4 speed automatic transmission. The H3T also features a video camera with DVD recording built into the bonnet to record off-road antics. For another concept vehicle Nike played a role in see the Nike One concept racer.

Hummer H3

The Hummer H3 is a vehicle from General Motors' Hummer division, introduced in 2006. The H3 is the smallest of the three Hummer models, and though the H3 concept car was a pickup truck, the final vehicle is a conventional SUV. Its GMT345 platform is based on the GMT355 which underpins the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickup trucks. The H3 is built at GM's Shreveport, Louisiana factory. Export versions will also be produced at the General Motors South Africa facility in Struandale, Port Elizabeth, South Africa. In the American market, the H3 is priced from $29,500 to just over $40,000.

  • Specifications
The H3 uses the 3.7 L (3653 cc) Atlas straight-5 engine, the same engine that is used in the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickup trucks. This 20-valve DOHC unit produces 242 hp (180 kW) at 5600 rpm and 242 ft·lbf (327 N·m) at 2800 rpm. It is available with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission that includes GM's Stabilitrak vehicle stability control. Its 111.9 in (2842 mm) wheelbase is 1.1 in (28 mm) shorter than the GMT360 SUVs.
It includes an electronically-controlled dual-speed transfer case and electronic locking differential.

Since it is rated at less than 8500 lb (3856 kg) (GVWR), Hummer is required to provide official fuel economy ratings. It is rated at 16 mpg in the city cycle with both transmissions and 19 mpg (US) (14.7 L/100km) with the automatic or 20 mpg (US) (11.7 L/100km) with the manual on the highway. While the Hummer H2 will ford 20 inches (0.5 m) of water, the H3 will handle 24 inches (0.6 m) of water (it has been tested in depths up to 31 inches). The H3 is the only vehicle in its class to have a 2-speed transfer case standard.
  • H3 Alpha
The H3 Alpha was introduced at the 2007 New York Auto Show as a new trim level for the 2008 model year H3. The Alpha package will feature a Vortec 5.3 L V-8 rated at 295 horsepower (224 kW) and 317 ft.lbf of torque (438 N·m), as well as platform enhancements to properly accommodate the V-8's increased size, weight, and power. Towing capacity is increased to 6,000 pounds (2,721 kg).
  • H3x
Introduced a the 2006 North American International Auto Show, the H3x is a trim update to the Hummer, among the additions were chrome and body-colored parts to differentiate it from the standard edition. The H3x trim package can be combined with the new Alpha package.
The Hummer H3T was a concept vehicle from Hummer - mainly used as a media diversion from the Hummer H3 which was to be released in mid 2005. The H3T had two doors and a pickup-style bed. Hummer has also been working with Nike to develop the tires and interior leather appointments.

Pimped Hummer World Run

The HUMMER World Run is the brainchild of GeigerCars, Europe's biggest HUMMER dealer and one of the biggest Hummer tuner/customizers you'll find in any country. If the name rings a bell, you probably remember their recent contribution to the American law enforcement community -- a 700-horsepower H2 that went to an unnamed County Sheriff in Texas.

Said to be the first international meet for Hummer owners, the two-day extravaganza is scheduled for October 7-8, during which over 150 HUMMERs and mil-spec HMMWVs will be on display and testing their mettle on an off-road course designed to showcase their capabilities. As of press time, we were not able to find out if the course has been altered to include a simulated US fast-food drive-thru lane complete with poles. Clearly, that would make it the most challenging HUMMER test course of all time...
Regular visitors to the festival will be able to test drive the HUMMER range, be eligible to win a 1-year HUMMER lease, and go for rides in GeigerCars' 10-meter-long H2 limousine -- allowing them to experience what it's like to go to to an American prom, albeit with better beer. It is Germany, after all.

HUMMER WORLD RUN is the name of the world's first international meet for owners of the American SUV, presented by GeigerCars.de, Europe largest HUMMER dealer, in Zorneding near Munich.

The festival, to which more than 150 Hummer and HMMWV vehicles from around the world are expected, features an extensive and highly entertaining program. A demanding off-road course lets HUMMER owners and visitors experience the exceptional off-road capabilities of the American 4x4. The HUMMER WORLD RUN Trophy tests participants' mettle with and without their vehicles.
Numerous other attractions await the visitors such as free test drives with various HUMMER models and rides in the 10-meter long HUMMER H2 stretch limo from GeigerCars.de. The festival tent features an evening program with live entertainment on Saturday and on Sunday a vehicle parade of participants will live up to its motto: "The HUMMER conquers Munich." The world of the Jochen-Schweizer.de experience offers loads of action both days as do the off-road courses set up by KTM and Polaris that give visitors the chance to try out the latest ATV's.

Families visiting the HUMMER meet also find lots of entertaining things to do: Admission for children under 16 is free. The HUMMER kids program features a moonwalk as well as rides on kids ATV's.

Hummer H2

The Hummer H2 is the second vehicle sold under the Hummer marque of General Motors. It is a large truck (lighter and slightly slimmer than the Hummer H1, while slightly longer and slightly taller) with room for six passengers (including driver). The rearmost part of the H2 SUV was modified to a pickup truck bed for the 2005 H2 SUT ("Sport Utility Truck").

The H2 is built under contract by AM General at a specially constructed plant in Mishawaka, Indiana, USA. Although it shares GM's GMT820 truck platform with the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon, those vehicles differ in many ways and are constructed in three other GM plants. The H2's final frame assembly is made up of 3 sections: The front uses a modified GM 2500-Series utility frame, the mid-section is all new and is completely boxed, and the rear section uses a modified GM 1500-Series frame which is upgraded for the 8,600 pound (3629 kg) gross vehicle weight.

H2 sales were initially strong, but fell to 28,898 for 2004 and 23,213 for 2005. The H2 was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2003.
A massive truck frame and slightly wider-than-average track may offer stability against overturning compared to some of the more common light truck SUV s, although objective tests have not been performed by the government or other outside parties due to its specialized vehicle class. The H2 is also capable of fording 20" of water, traversing a 40% side slope, ascending/descending a 60% grade, and towing 6,700lbs.

The H2 is marketed as both a general purpose vehicle and as an off-road vehicle. Because of mass marketing by GM, it is primarily used as a passenger vehicle on typical roads. Along with the Ford Excursion, the H2 is also a very common vehicle for a limousine conversion.

Hummer H1

The Hummer H1 was a civilian vehicle based on the M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), popularly known as the Humvee, which was created by AM General. The vehicle was produced from 1992 through 2006.

Originally released in the civilian market in 1992, the Hummer H1 owed its birth to the popularity of photos from Operation Desert Storm and the enthusiastic campaign from actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who personally owns several variants of Hummer vehicles. GM announced that 2006 would be the last model year for the Hummer H1, with production winding down in June 2006 due to a new emission law for Diesel engine vehicles which takes effect in 2007.
Due to the requirement to meet EPA Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions standards, the cost involving recertification for a low volume civilian variant vehicle was not able to be justified. AM General currently has orders for an excess of 50,000 new HMMWVs to be produced between 2006-2009 for the United States Military. AM General also will continue to produce the H1, just not the Alpha. These vehicles will be sold through fleet sales.
It is rumored that the next H1 will most-likely bear a refined version of the prior 6.5 L Turbo Diesel engine, but that has not been confirmed. Selling the H1s through fleet sales will allow AM General to not be subjected to the new 2007 Tier 2 Bin 5 emission rules and regulations. AM General has sufficient fleet orders to produce 600-800 units per year right now. The fleet H1s will end up using the standard 6.5 L Turbo Diesel that has been commonplace in GM and commercial applications.

The Hummer H1 has three common variants: a convertible-like soft top, a four-door hard top pickup truck and a Wagon body version. Other less known variants include a two-door pickup truck and a four-door slantback. At this time, the convertible/soft top and the station wagon versions are the only ones available in the mass market. The two door and four door pickup versions are only available in fleet livery.

Currently, five engine types and three automatic transmission types can be found in Hummer H1s. The common engine/transmission combinations are:

  • 6.2 L GM Diesel V8/GM TH400/3L80 3-speed
  • 6.5 L GM Diesel V8/GM 4L80-E 4-speed
  • 5.7 L Vortec 5700 gasoline V8 TBI/GM 4L80-E 4-speed
  • 6.5 L turbo GM Diesel V8/GM 4L80-E 4-speed
  • 6.6 L turbo Duramax LLY turbo Diesel/Allison 1000 5-speed (model year 2006)

The Hummer H1 shares some common driveline parts with its HMMWV brethren. Items like brakes, differentials, frame and major body panels (hood, tailgate and quarter panels) are identical between the HMMWV and the Hummer H1. All Hummer H1s and HMMWVs come off the same first stage assembly line, and then are separated midway to either become a military HMMWV or a civilian H1.
Hummer H1s are unique in the way they handle off road, and in their interior arrangement. Passenger and highway comfort are sacrificed for maximum mobility compared to civilian SUVs, with features much more radical than the original Jeep, though they do share a similarly cut simple grille opening. They are inherently very stable, thanks to their wide stance. They also can ford 30 inches (76 cm) of water, climb a 22-inch (56 cm) step, have a stock ground clearance of 16 inches (41 cm). This high clearance is made possible by tucking driveline components inside a channel in the central space between the left and right seats. They have high approach/departure angles of 72/37.5 degrees. Most H1s are equipped with a Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS), which enables the driver to increase or decrease the tire air pressure at will- since lower tire pressures are more suited for off road, and higher tire pressures are desirable on-road.
Hummer H1s have many unusual features. They use inboard brakes. They have geared hubs, allowing the drivetrain's half shafts to be up high for greater clearance. The radiator is up high, sloping back over the engine on a forward hinged hood. The air intake is mounted high, enabling fording waist-level water. Rather than using simple runflat tires, aluminum or rubber inserts are an optional feature for runflat ability. Chemical warfare resistant paint is available only on the military version.
